The calligraphy presented depicts in the composition "Basmala" phrase (ar. بسملة‎‎ ) in the shape of the tughra of sultan Abdul Hamid II.
Also known as Bismillah ("In the name of Allah"), is the name of the Islamic phrase Bismillahi'r Rahmani'r Raheem "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful".

The Ottoman tughra is a calligraphic emblem of the sultan's authority that was included in all official documents, such as royal decrees, endowment papers, correspondence, and coins. Used by the first Ottoman sultan in 1324, it later developed into a more complex form that included three vertical shafts and two concentric oval loops on the left.
